The term "emergency brake" is a bit of a misnomer when referring to the parking brake system. The purpose of the parking brake is to hold the 1998 Ford KM Tool in place when parked. If you drive the Explorer with the parking brake engaged, the brake shoes can wear out quickly. In the event this occurs, you must replace them.

1
Put on safety glasses. Put a lug wrench on each lug nut on the rear wheels and loosen them, one at a time. Roll a floor jack under the rear differential, and lift the rear end of the Explorer with the jack. Position jack stands on either side of the rear axle, out near the leaf spring perches and lower the Explorer onto the jack stands.

2
Take the left rear lug nuts off the Locksmith Tools, and pull the wheel off by hand. Place a drip pan under the brake assembly, and spray the assembly thoroughly with brake cleaner. Remove the brake caliper bolts, using a socket set. Grab the top of the brake caliper and lift it off the rotor. Hang the bracket on the leaf spring so it doesn't pull on the brake line.

3
Remove the rubber oval-shaped plugged from the inboard side of the backing plate, using a pick. Turn the star adjuster upward with the pick to back it off the parking brake shoes. Tap the hub of the brake rotor with a dead blow hammer until you can pull the drum off by hand. Never strike the braking surface of the brake rotor.

4
obd2 tool Uses the pick to remove the return spring and adjuster spring by hooking the tips of the springs and pulling them out of their retainer eyelets. Pull the adjuster out by hand. Unhook and remove the brake shoe hold-down springs with the pick. Pull the brake shoes out by hand. Spray the entire area with brake cleaner to remove any built-up brake dust or other gunk that will prevent the shoes from moving freely. Reassemble in reverse of removal.

5
Repeat Steps 3 and 4 on the other side.

6
Reinstall the wheels and lug nuts. Lower the Explorer off the jack stands with the floor jack. Tighten the lug nuts to 100 foot-lbs. with a torque wrench.
Notice:
You can purchase the pick, dead blow USA PROG Full package wrench at an auto parts store or tool retailer.
Never spray brake cleaner without wearing safety glasses. If you get the solvent in your eyes, wash immediately with water and be prepared for several days of pain.
